Both models of the iPhone 6 are way bigger than the comparatively tiny 4in iPhone 5/5s/5c, and indeed some think that the iPhone 6 Plus, at 5.5in, is just a little too big to be practical.
Imagine, then, a not too distant parallel universe where Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus has a colossal 5.7in display.
That’s the word from an incredibly interesting – and incredibly long! – interview with Apple design guy Jony Ive, published by The New Yorker.
Making the long-awaited leap beyond 4in was obviously a huge deal for Apple, and deciding on the ideal sizes was a decision taken very carefully.
“The first [iPhone 6 Plus size] we really felt good about was a 5.7,” reveals Jony. “And then, sleeping on it, and coming back to it, it was just ‘Ah, that’s way too big.’ And then 5.6 still seems too big.”
Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook describes the process: “Jony didn’t pull out of his butt the 4.7 and the 5.5.”
It’s interesting that Jony reckoned the 5.7in iPhone 6 Plus was “way too big”, while the finished product is only two tenths of an inch smaller. Indeed, the smaller 4.7in iPhone 6 has proven significantly more popular (though we’ll never know the exact figures).
